Jacobien Rutgers (1968) is senior lecturer at the Amsterdam Institute for Private Law (Universiteit van Amsterdam). She studied law at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. After defending her thesis at the European University Institute (Florence) she practised law in Amsterdam for four years. She teaches in the fields of European Private Law, Private International Law and Property Law. Her specific research interest is the relation between private law, private international law and the law of the internal market.

Forthcoming projects include within the framework of the Study Group on a European Civil Code 'Principles of European Law on Commercial Agency, Franchising and Distribution Contracts' together with Martijn W. Hesselink, Odavia Bueno Díaz, Manola Scotton and Muriel Veldman. She is also a member of the editorial team that prepares a second edition of 'Cases, Materials and Text on Contract Law' within the Ius Commune Casebooks on the Common Law of Europe.
